Founded
by Bill Sosa Sensei in 1994, and headquartered in Dallas, Texas, USA,
the International Aikido Association consists of affiliated dojos in
the states and Mexico. IAA provides a non-competitive, family-type atmosphere
at its dojos, observing traditional values of courtesy and respect.
Aikido is a martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba
in Japan in the mid-1920's. It has elements of Jujitsu and Judo. Aikido
translated means the path of harmony.
We learn to blend with, rather
than go against, the force of an attack. The idea is to forget the self,
and follow the opponent's movement. In this way, the opponent is defeated
by blending with and using his energy.
Benefits of Aikido training
include:
Promotes Health
Develops stamina and endurance. Deep breathing
massages the internal organs, while stretching conditions the joints.
Unifies Body, Mind and
Spirit
Heightens mental concentration as the body and
mind are trained to work together in a focused and efficient way.
Develops Character
Promotes honesty, kindness, self-respect and respect
for others. Improves interpersonal relations. Nurtures the growth of
self-discipline.
Teaches Self-Defense
Trains the student to use effective self-defense
techniques that neutralize an attack without causing serious injury
to the attacker.
Provides Alternatives
in Conflict Resolution
Aikido, used as a metaphor, illustrates numerous
alternatives to the use of force in resolving conflict.
